Travel sets have a shape problem that other collections do not: they contain panoramas. A 3:1 photograph of a coastline in a square cell loses two thirds of itself, and most collage tools will do exactly that without mentioning it. Here a photo wider than about 2:1 is treated as a different kind of object and given a full-width row, which is the only arrangement that shows it as it was taken.
The rest of a trip set is usually a mix of upright shots of people and wide shots of places, which is the case the layout engine is built around. Each photo's cell is derived from its own proportions, so the portraits stay portrait and the landscapes stay landscape, and the unavoidable cropping is spread thinly across all of them rather than concentrated on whichever one fits worst.
Pinterest is worth a separate thought, because it is where travel collages actually get found. A 2:3 pin at 1000 × 1500 is the tallest shape Pinterest recommends, and anything taller is cropped in the feed. A collage made for a story at 9:16 will therefore lose its top and bottom if it is posted as a pin, which is why switching canvas here re-solves the arrangement rather than scaling it.
If you want the place named on the collage, there are presets for a location tag and for coordinates, both of which sit over the photos rather than cropping into them. The coordinates are yours to type: location data in your photo files is never read, so nothing is filled in for you and nothing about where you were is written into the exported file.
Large trips can run to a hundred photos or more. Counts that big use justified rows, which is the arrangement a magazine uses for a contact sheet, and they stay fast — the engine solves two hundred photos in well under a second, and the export is rendered in horizontal bands so even a poster-sized version does not exhaust the browser.
