A story is 1080 × 1920, but you cannot use all of it. The top is covered by the profile row and the close button, and the bottom by the reply bar and whatever stickers or captions get added — roughly 250 pixels at the top and 310 at the bottom, which leaves about 1360 pixels of genuinely visible height. A collage designed edge to edge loses a row at each end, and it is always the row with the caption in it.
So this page marks the safe area on the canvas. The photos can run full bleed behind it — that usually looks better — but titles, dates and anything you want read go inside the marked band. The same canvas and the same margins apply to Facebook Stories, TikTok and WhatsApp Status, so one export covers all four.
Tall canvases want different arrangements from square ones. A 9:16 frame is more than twice as tall as it is wide, so an even grid gives you cells that are much taller than any photograph, and everything gets cropped vertically. Stacked rows of two or three work far better, as does one full-width photo at the top with a row beneath it. The engine prefers those shapes automatically on a 9:16 canvas, which is why the layouts offered here differ from the ones on the feed page.
Three to six photos is the sensible range. A story is looked at for a couple of seconds, so a collage of twelve is not read, it is scrolled past. If you have more, two stories work better than one crowded one, and exporting a second arrangement of the same photos takes one click.
