How it works

Instagram's sizes are less obvious than they look, because the feed and the profile grid do not show the same crop. A feed post can be 4:5, which is 1080 × 1350 and the tallest the platform allows, but the profile grid crops that to 3:4 — so the top and bottom of a 4:5 collage are missing when someone looks at your profile. The difference is about 90 pixels at each end, which is enough to cut a title or a row of faces in half.
That is why this page draws the grid crop on the canvas while you work. Anything you want visible in both places goes inside the marked area; anything decorative can sit outside it. It is a small thing that is impossible to get right by guessing, and it is the single most common reason a collage looks fine when posted and wrong on a profile a day later.
Resolution above 1080 pixels wide is wasted. Instagram downsamples everything to 1080, and giving it a 4096-pixel file means the platform does the resizing with its own settings rather than you doing it with yours. Exporting at exactly 1080 × 1350 as a JPG at quality 90 or above generally survives the platform's own re-encoding with the fewest artefacts, which is what the Social optimised option does here.
For the collage itself, six to nine photos is the range that reads on a phone at feed size. A 4:5 canvas divided nine ways gives cells of roughly 360 × 450 pixels, which is about a centimetre and a half on a phone screen — enough for a face, not enough for a face in the background of a wide shot. Above nine, consider a carousel of two collages rather than one crowded image.
